Marlborough-based Boston Scientific will close its manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, and lay off 54 workers beginning on Aug. 11, according to a California WARN report.
Biotech industry news source Fierce Biotech first reported the WARN report news, saying the layoffs will consist of 47 Boston Scientific employees and five consultants.
“We initially informed employees of the intent to transfer this work from the Fremont, CA location to Minnesota upon close of the Devoro Medical acquisition in November of 2021. Employees affected by this transfer will be given a 60-day notice and will be supported with transition assistance,” read a statement provided to WBJ by Boston Scientific on Friday morning.
“We are transferring the work currently performed at the Fremont, CA location in support of the WOLF Thrombectomy Platform to a Boston Scientific facility in Minnesota. Transferring work among our facilities helps us align our products, capabilities, technologies, and resources to best support our business strategies, meet market demands, and improve our operating performance while delivering value, along with life-changing medical solutions, to our customers and their patients,” read the statement.
In January 2022, Boston Scientific closed a plant in San Jose, California, laying off 170, according to a 2022 WARN report. In 2015, the company closed different facilities in San Jose and Fremont, laying off 455, according to a 2015 WARN report.
