Marlborough medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific Corp. has announced a limited market release of a new pain-relief system that uses electrical impulses in the spine to block pain signals.

The WaveWriter Alpha portfolio of Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) systems is designed to provide relief for chronic pain, which impacts more than 50 million people in the U.S., according to a release from Boston Scientific. The SCS therapies provide pain relief by sending mild electric pulses to the spinal cord to interrupt pain signals traveling to the brain.

The four MRI conditional, Bluetooth-enabled rechargeable and non-rechargeable implantable pulse generators are designed to function without even the light tingling sensation associated with paresthesia-based therapy.

Also, unlike other systems that can take  up to a few days or longer to provide pain relief, the company’s proprietary therapy developed with Duke University was developed to provide immediate relief.

The WaveWriter Alpha SCS Systems were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 2020 and is indicated as an aid in the management of chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs.
