Boston Scientific, a medical device manufacturer based in Marlborough, has been granted European approval for a single-use bronchoscope, which is a camera inserted into the airway all the way to the lungs.
In a press release announcing the CE Mark approval, as European health regulations are known, the company said the EXALT Model B Single-Use Bronchoscope is a single-use device designed for bedside procedures in the intensive care unit, operating room and bronchoscopy suite. The device comes in three sizes to allow it to be used for a variety of procedures.
"Single-use scopes are emerging as the preference for many physicians due to their ability to eliminate the risk of scope-related infection that may result from ineffective reprocessing while also increasing operational efficiencies in the hospital setting," Dave Pierce, executive vice president and president of MedSurg and president of endoscopy for Boston Scientific, said in the release.
Limited market release of the device is expected to commence in Europe in the coming weeks.
