Boston Scientific launches stent system in Japan

In a move it believes will improve its position in the Japanese drug-eluting stent market, Natick-based Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX) announced Thursday the launch of Promus Premier Stent System in the Asian country.

Part of the company’s drug-eluding stent technology, the system recently received approval from the Japanese government, the company said.

The system was developed with input from interventional cardiologists and outcomes and is intended to be just one treatment option for coronary artery disease, the company said.

"The Promus Premier Stent System reflects our commitment to (drug-eluting stent, or DES) technology and to providing interventional cardiologists with the most complete portfolio of clinical solutions," said Kevin Ballinger, president of Interventional Cardiology for BSX. "Japan is an important interventional cardiology market, and we believe the launch and success of this stent system in Japan will enhance Boston Scientific's overall growth strategy in the DES market."

The system received approvals from European authorities and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year, the company said.
