Marlborough medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific Corp. acquired Lumenis, an Israel-based surgical company specializing in urological lasers, in a $1.1-billion deal announced on Wednesday.

Boston Scientific had a distribution agreement with Lumenis for more than 20 years focusing on markets in Japan and the United States. Through the acquisition, Boston Scientific  would now be able to sell lasers to other countries such as China, according to the statement.

"The close of this acquisition allows us to integrate the Lumenis laser portfolio – including the differentiated MOSES technology – with our category leading kidney stone management and benign prostatic hyperplasia offerings while expanding our global footprint to accelerate growth throughout Europe and Asia," said Meghan Scanlon, senior vice president and president of Urology and Pelvic Health at Boston Scientific, in the press release announcement.

Boston Scientific has been growing through multi-million and billion-dollar acquisitions over the last several years. Before closing of the Lumenis deal, the company's most recent deal was the $575-million purchase of the remaining shares of California cardiac firm Farapulse, Inc.
