Boston Scientific acquires medical device firm

Boston Scientific Corp. in Natick has acquired EndoTex Interventional Systems Inc., a development stage medical device company based in Cupertino, CA.

The acquisition comes on the heels of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the NexStent Carotid Stent System, a device manufactured by EndoTex and distributed exclusively by Boston Scientific.  Terms of the acquisition were not released.

Said Joseph Tartaglia, president and CEO of EndoTex Interventional Systems: "The transaction with Boston Scientific represents a marriage of two great organizations.  Their established infrastructure and our innovative technology will allow Boston Scientific to make the NexStent Carotid Stent System available to physicians around the world."

The NexStent Carotid Stent System was studied in the CABERNET trial along with Boston Scientific's FilterWire EZ Embolic Protection System.  The two devices work in tandem, with the FilterWire EX Embolic Protection System capturing plague that may dislodge during stent implantation, helping to reduce the risk of procedural-related stroke.  The FDA has cleared the FilterWire system for use in patients with carotid artery disease who are at high risk for surgery.
