Boston preservation group The Trustees has acquired the 296-acre Jewell Hill Farm, which spans Ashby, Ashburnham and Fitchburg to protect the drinking water supply, the organization announced on Wednesday.
The acquisition, located off Crocker Road, is the group’s 120th property. It has long been owned and managed by the Crocker family.
Exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, although The Trustees indicated the Crocker Family donated a significant portion of the land. The Boston group did receive funding and support from the Massachusetts Division of Conservation Services and Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts to support the conversation efforts.
The land will now be a permanently protected drinking water supply and place for recreation, according to a press release. The land includes open fields, vernal pools, woodland streams and farmland visas, as well as forest trails for hiking and cross-country skiing
“We are so grateful to the Crocker family and the residents and town officials from all three communities for making it possible to add Jewell Hill to our collection of special places,” Trustees president and CEO Barbara Erickson said in a statement. “We are proud to expand on the area’s history of small family agriculture py preserving and maintaining the land for recreational use by all people for decades to come.”
