Boston Marathon postponed to fall

Boston and Massachusetts officials confirmed Friday the Boston Marathon will be postponed until the fall amid concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

Instead of holding the marathon on Patriots' Day as is tradition, officials plan to reschedule it to Sept. 14 and will seek legislative approval to declare the day a state holiday. The postponement will be the first in the marathon's 124-year history.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh urged athletes not to run the course on April 20, warning that roads will not be closed and that first responders will be occupied with COVID-19 response. The decision was difficult, he said, but necessary to ensure the health and safety of the community.

"That's what all of this is about: protecting vulnerable neighbors and populations and preserving the capacity of the health care system in Massachusetts," Walsh said.
