Bose, the Framingham manufacturer known for its pricey headphones and speakers, plans to close its U.S. stores, the company said Wednesday.
Joanne Berthiaume, Bose spokeswoman, declined to make anyone available for an interview or provide details about how many employees will be laid off.
In an email statement, she said the decision to shutter the stores was driven by a dramatic shift to online shopping in certain markets.
Bose said it plans to close 119 retail stores in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia over the next several months. The company said it will maintain more than 130 stores in China, the United Arab Emirates, India, South Korea, and other markets.
The company was launched in 1964 by former MIT student Amar Bose. Its first store opened in Kittery, Maine in 1993, according to a history on the manufacturer’s website.
They have stores at the Burlington Mall and Wrentham Village Premium Outlets.
Bose said it plans to offer outplacement assistance and severance to affected employees, but declined to provide details.
