Bose Building Major Plant In Malaysia
Framingham-based audio equipment giant Bose Corp. plans to build a manufacturing facility in Malaysia to produce products for the Asia-Pacific region and is considering shutting a U.S. plant, a company executive told reporters.
According to press reports, Bryan Fontaine, Bose's vice president for manufacturing and global supply chain, announced the project at the Malasian Investment Development Authority today.
Fontaine said the facility will be located in Batu Kawan, Penang. It's scheduled to open in mid-2013 and will produce and distribute products for the company's markets in Australia, China, India, Japan, the United Arab Emirate and Southeast Asia.
Bernama, a Malaysian news agency, reported that Fontaine declined to disclose the total cost of the project but said the plant will involve several phases and eventually reach 600,000 square feet.
Fontaine also told the agency that the company is "reconsidering" its U.S. footprint, suggesting it might close a plant here. Bose has six locations in Central Massachusetts, four in Framingham (including the headquarters on Bose Mountain) and one each in Stow and Westborough.
He said Malaysia is a good choice for a new plant in part because of the country's safeguards on intellectual property.
(Clarification: Bose said Tuesday that it "Has no plans to close any of our manufacturing plants in North America.")
