The board of directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts has named its first female CEO, Sarah Iselin, the Boston-based health insurer announced at the end of August.Â
Iselin, who will also serve as the company’s president, will take over on Jan. 1, replacing Andrew Dreyfus. Dreyfus has led the company for 12 years, according to Blue Cross.
Iselin will begin working at the company a month earlier, on Dec. 5.
Blue Cross is the largest health insurance provider in Massachusetts, with 534,366 members at the end of 2021, giving the company a 25% market share, according to the WBJ Research Department.
Currently, Iselin is executive vice president and chief operating officer at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit Blue plan. She’s worked in and held leadership positions in the private and public sectors, according to the announcement.
“Sarah is a gifted leader who’s smart, strategic, and passionate about improving health care,” said Dreyfus, in a statement. “She knows our company, our culture and our values, and I look forward to working closely with her on an effective transition over the next few months.”
