Blue Cross gives $1M toward UMass, Community Healthlink recovery coach training

Two Worcester health treatment centers, at UMass Memorial Medical Center and Community Healthlink, will receive help for trained professionals who work with patients to overcome addiction.
The so-called recovery coaches at those two centers and eight others across the state are being helped over a two-year period by a $1-million grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. The funds will help those centers support and expand their recovery coach programs and share experiences and data with one another.
Evidence has shown recovery coaches can help improve recovery for those with substance abuse disorder, said Andrew Dreyfus, the president and CEO of Blue Cross. The insurer will look at data from the participating centers to determine potential payment models for use of recovery coaches, he said.
UMass Memorial Medical Center and Community Healthlink, which is part of the UMass Memorial Health Care system, were chosen for the program through a request-for-proposals process open to Blue Cross contracted providers.
