Blackstone Valley leaders pass on Amazon bid

Instead of an Amazon bid, Blackstone Valley leaders will use that energy on other economic development projects.
Despite seriously considering submitting a bid for Amazon’s HQ2, Blackstone Valley leaders ultimately decided to forego a proposal.
Officials from Douglas, Millbury, Sutton, Northbridge and Uxbridge began meeting last month to discuss a potential submittal, but State Rep. Joseph McKenna (R-Webster) said Thursday the group opted to not pursue a bid.
If it had, it would be one of dozens of communities courting the Seattle-based online commerce giant and its 50,000 jobs and $5 billion infrastructure investment. The bids are due today.
Instead, the group recommitted to a project started about four years ago towards creating a regional economic development district along the Route 146 corridor, McKenna said Thursday.
The group is now connected with MassDevelopment and will pursue infrastructure and grant money to help advance the area’s economic development goals.
“Hopefully that by creating a regional economic development district, we will be well positioned for future bids of a similar nature,” McKenna said.
