The U.S. House of Representatives Thursday approved legislation to make the Blackstone River Valley National Historic Corridor part of the National Park System.
Now that the FY15 NDAA bill has passed the House, it must be approved by the U.S. Senate before being sent to the president’s desk to become law. The Senate is expected to vote on the legislation next week, according to a statement from the office of U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester.
McGovern cosponsored the bill with U.S. Reps. David N. Cicilline and James Langevin of Rhode Island, and U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island introduced the legislation in the Senate, according to the statement.
“This action represents a significant step in our efforts to preserve the history and ecology of the Blackstone Valley,” Rep. McGovern said. “It’s been a long time coming, and I commend Congressman Cicilline and Senator Reed for their leadership. I look forward to seeing the Blackstone in our National Park System.”
The congressional effort for National Park System recognition of the Blackstone River Valley, which spans from Worcester to Providence, has been active since 2011.
