Biz Confidence Makes Slight Gains In October

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts Business Confidence Index rose by slightly less than a point to end October at 43.3.

The score is 10 points above the index's all-time low of 33.3, registered last February, and its seventh gain in the last eight months. The index is an employers' assessment of the state's overall economic climate. A score of 50 is considered neutral.

Although most respondents to the survey on which the index is based said the economy was improving, 21 percent said the true economic recovery is "not in sight." Only 4 percent agreed that the recession is, in fact, over.

The Future Index, which asks employers to predict the economic conditions for the next six months has risen 11.4 points since February and finished October at 47.4. AIM said the future index made most of its gains in early summer and has since leveled off.
