Histo-Scientific Research Laboratories, a research and service provider for biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, plans to expand its Worcester presence following a merger and new investment.
HSRL said it has merged with Vet Path Services in Ohio, an independent contractor in histopathology, the study of how tissues are affected by disease. HSRL has received a new investment from Ampersand Capital Partners, which has offices in Boston, to help the company expand in the pre-clinical histopathology market.
HSRL is based at Worcester's Gateway Park office complex as part of Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives, or MBI. The company started its lab at MBI in 2016 with one full-time employee and a part-time pathologist, and now has four, with plans to expand to roughly 15 by the end of 2019, CEO Tom Galati said.
The company has roughly 1,000 square feet at MBI today, and is looking to triple that space, Galati said. The goal, he said, is to create a full-service lab for toxicologic and investigative histopathology to support its immunohistochemistry and image analysis clients.
HSRL, which is based in Virginia, now has offices in Ohio from the merger with Vet Path Services.
HSRL did not disclose the amount of new financing it has received from Ampersand Capital Partners. The investor says its primary focus is on health care companies and that the merger of HSRL and Vet Path Services represented a great fit with its strategies.
