Big Y purchased 4.9M lbs. of local produce in 2015

As Big Y rolls out its local produce purchases for the season, the Springfield-based grocery store chain announced this week it purchased 4.85 million pounds of local produce last season.

“Every year we add more and more daily supplies of native fruits and vegetables providing our customers with the best produce in the region. In fact, each year, we have been able to expand our local grower family to include more than ever before,” Michael D’Amour, executive vice president, said in a statement.

The family-owned business reported its local purchases for the week on Wednesday, which included farms in the western part of Massachusetts as well as in Connecticut. The local produce is available in the grocery store’s 68 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
