Big Y, a Springfield grocery chain with six Central Massachusetts locations, is eliminating plastic bags at all checkout aisles.
The chain is making the environmentally friendly transition in all 80 stores across Massachusetts and Connecticut as of Aug. 1, offering discounts on reusable bags through August to help customers make the transition.
The move comes as Massachusetts communities increasingly force the change by banning all single-use plastic bags. According to the environmental group the Sierra Club, 122 cities and towns, combined to include more than half of the state's population, have passed regulations on such bags.
Those communities include Acton, Ashland, Athol, Berlin, Framingham, Grafton, Hopkinton, Lunenburg, Natick, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southbridge, Sudbury, Townsend, Wayland, Westborough and Winchester. Worcester officials have considered a ban but not enacted one.
Big Y said it has complied with those bans since 2014, but with such bans spreading across the area, the company moved up from 2020 its plan to eliminate single-use plastics.
Big Y has six stores in Central Massachusetts: 100 Mayfield St. in Worcester, 62 W. Main St. in Spencer, 160 Reservoir St. in Holden, 505 E. Main St. in Southbridge, 7 Medway Road in Milford, and 348 E. Central St. in Franklin.
I see that the nature nuts are taking over at Big Y!
