Big gains year over year for tourist sectors, as Mass. unemployment drops to 3.5%

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts dropped by two -tenths of a percentage point for the second month in a row in July, hitting 3.5%, matching the national rate.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate in July 2021 was 5.7%.

Big gains were made in the hospitality, culture, and tourism industries since last year, according to data released Friday by the Massachusetts Department of Economic Research. Year-over-year, jobs in the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector saw a 31% increase. The leisure and hospitality sector added 30,700 jobs, a 10% increase.

Transportation, warehousing and utilities jobs were up by almost 9% year-over-year, possibly reflecting the warehouse boom in parts of Massachusetts.

The finance and insurance sector lost 4,800 jobs statewide year-over-year, but gained 600 hundred jobs since June.

July data indicates big gains in local government jobs since June, but this can be attributed to schools hiring for the school year.
