The Mount Wachusett Community College Foundation Inc. has named Scott B. Howard, COO of Bemis Associates in Shirley, as its Harold E. Drake Citizen of the Year.
Bemis is a manufacturer of specialty adhesives and coatings for the apparel, automotive and woodworking industries. Under Howard's leadership, the Gardner college said, the company contributes money and volunteer work to the United Way of North Central Massachusetts and the Town of Shirley. The company also sponsors the annual Thanks by Giving luncheon for 350 seniors and offers employees the chance to volunteer on a project of their choice for one week a year, with pay.
Howard has served on the United Way board of directors for the past nine years.
Bemis has been owned by the Howard family since 1930. Besides its Shirley headquarters, it has locations in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
The Citizen of the Year award is presented to a person with an extraordinary commitment to North Central Massachusetts in memory of Harold E. Drake, former president of Royal Steam Heater Co. and Lynde Hardware & Supply Inc. The award will be presented at the foundation's annual dinner on Oct. 30.
