Glass container manufacturer Ardagh Group announced Monday it will close its Milford production facility, which employs 250 people.
The closure, the Luxembourg-based company said in a press release, is due a decline in demand from the mass beer market in the U.S.
The 1.2 million-square-foot facility at 1 National St. is expected to close by the end of March.
The decision follows a review of the company’s glass North America operations in October finding growth opportunities in stronger performing end markets, like wine, spirits and food, Ardagh said.
A portion of the company’s mass beer operations will be converted to serve those markets. Other investments will be made in the company’s production and inspection equipment to foster more innovation within the company’s North American operations, Ardagh said.
The company didn’t mention it’s canning business on Tuesday, but previous announcements from the company signal a shift to that market.
In April 2016, the company announced its acquisition of beverage can manufacturing operations and 22 production facilities in the U.S., Europe, and Brazil from two companies for $3.42 billion.
That move was the company’s entry into the beverage can market and has since designed new cans for small and midsize breweries.
