Robert Johnson, president of Becker College in Worcester, is one of three finalists for the UMass Dartmouth chancellor position, the system announced Wednesday.
Johnson has been president of Becker since 2010, where he focused his efforts on creating a more nimble and entrepreneurial organization responsive to the needs of the community. Becker now has 2,100 students and its video game design program was named the fifth best in the country by the Princeton Review.
Johnson is chairman of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“President Johnson is humbled to be named as a finalist for the next chancellor of the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth). At present, he is focused on continuing to advance the Becker College value proposition and is not available for further comment," Becker spokeswoman Carolyn Assa said.
The other two finalists for the UMass Dartmouth chancellor job are James Lentini, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Oakland University in Michigan; and Philip Way, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. The three were selected out of 165 candidates.
UMass President Marty Meehan will select one of the finalists to recommend to the UMass board of trustees. Meehan will meet with the finalists in the coming days, according to the UMass announcement.
If Johnson leaves Becker, he would be the third Central Massachusetts higher education president to depart in 2017 with Mount Wachusett Community College President Daniel Asquino retiring March 19 and Quinsigamond Community College President Gail Carberry retiring at the end of the spring semester.
