Becker College’s new data science degree program hired Feyzi R. Bagirov of Boston, naming him founding director of the program, the college said Thursday in a statement.
He will lead the growth of the program as he takes a collaborative approach with other academic programs at the college, the statement from Becker said. Those collaborations will include informatics in the field of biology, big data analytics in business studies, policing analytics in the criminal justice program, and gaming analytics for Becker's interactive media design students.
“Big data represents one of the fastest growing areas of business, estimated to become a $17 trillion industry by 2020, and it is critical that we educate students for careers requiring a strong data science background,” said Nancy P. Crimmin, the college's vice president of student affairs and interim vice president for academic affairs.
Crimmin said Bagirov is well qualified to provide students with the skills they need in data mining, data visualization, machine learning and other areas.
Bagirov is currently an online instructor for Southern New Hampshire University, and previously contributed to the creation of a master of science program in data analytics at the University of Maryland's University College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in international economics from Azerbaijan University in Baku, Azerbaijan, and an M.B.A. focusing on entrepreneurship from Babson College in Wellesley.
“I am honored to be named founding director of the college’s new data science degree program, which is interdisciplinary and unique among undergraduate programs in the region,” Bagirov said.
According to Becker’s website, the data science degree program prepares students for success in an information-based global economy by evaluating and analyzing data science problems, requiring the integration of computer science, mathematics, and other specialized disciplines.
