The Town of Leicester has entered into an agreement with former Becker College and has the option for full acquisition of its Leicester campus for $17.8 million, said Assistant Town Administrator Kristen Forsberg.
Selectboard members at Monday night’s meeting said the acquisition would be a wise choice for the town.
Forsberg said the town will take the summer to discuss reuse options, based on evaluation of renovation, utility, and maintenance cost of the 25 acres of land.
A joint committee of the select board, town administrators, school committee, and advisory committee will assess the space. In September, residents will be brought into the decision-making process with a ballot vote and town meeting.
Becker owns two-thirds of Leicester’s town common, including a number of historic homes like the May House, which was part of the Underground Railroad.
The former campus includes dorm buildings, classroom space, and a turf field costing $888,000 when it was constructed two years ago.
Among the many options for reuse, Forsberg mentioned high school classroom space and veteran or senior housing, said Forsberg.
The Worcester Telegram & Gazette first reported news of the potential sale.
