Bay State Drops In Litigation Ranking

Businesses in Massachusetts had better watch out for lawsuits.

Directorship, a Boston-based magazine aimed at board directors, put the state in 34th place in its Annual Boardroom Guide to State Litigation Climates, down from number 29 last year. The magazine blamed Gov. Deval Patrick, the state Legislature and Attorney General Martha Coakley for supporting plaintiffs' ability to sue companies.

The state dropped especially far in Directorship's ranking of monetary tort loses, from 19th in 2006 to 32nd this year. It is also among the five states with the greatest liability risks, the magazine said.

Tennessee was number one on the list, and Illinois took the bottom place.
