Vertically integrated lithium ion battery recycling and manufacturing company Battery Resourcers, based in Worcester, announced on Tuesday that it will open two new pilot plants in Westborough and Michigan.
At the same time, its Worcester operation will be converted into a mechanical shredding operation, including disassembly, discharge and shredding operation for cells, modules and complete battery packs, according to a press release.
The Westborough facility will process black mass to cathode precursor material and purify recovered graphite to battery grade, per the announcement. The Michigan site will include sintering and finishing of high-energy density nickel manganese cobalt cathode, and will include a materials analytical lab, as well as battery production and test capabilities.
The company said commercial expansion in North America and Europe will be announced later this year.
Battery Resourcers did not immediately say how the expansion will increase its workforce, nor clarify details about the location and size of the Westborough facility.
