The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Barre is one of 17 Massachusetts organizations receiving funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the state's Department of Agricultural Resources has announced.
Through the grant, funded by the United States Farm Bill, the association will receive $5,000 to improve educational resources for Massachusetts organic vegetable growers.
In all, grants for organizations in the state total $439,000 and are awarded to projects aimed at making specialty crops, such as fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, tree nuts, horticulture and nursery products, more competitive. About $55 million will be granted to state departments throughout the country.
"These grants showcase how our farmers have diversified their crops and methods of production to meet the changing consumer markets. From the smallest to largest grant they help to sustain our agricultural heritage," said Rep. Anne Gobi, House chair of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture.
