Cognex Corp. of Natick and a Washington state firm have reached a settlement of all outstanding litigation between the parties, the companies announced Thursday.
In a joint statement, Cognex and Microscan Systems, of Renton, Wash., said the settlement includes a patent cross-license agreement under which both will continue to produce current models of their handheld barcode readers.
Cognex and Microscan compete in the market over direct part mark (DPM) handheld barcode readers, which can read challenging barcodes marked directly on parts. The products use sophisticated lighting techniques to enable decoding, the patents for which are addressed by the settlement, the statement said.
“I’m pleased that we reached an agreement so that both companies can focus on the needs of the marketplace without the distraction of litigation,” Robert J. Willett, Cognex’s president and CEO said in the statement.
“Both companies have a long and proud history of innovation. This agreement allows us to continue leveraging that innovation for the benefit of our respective customers and the market,” said Microscan’s president, Scott L. Summerville.
The two companies have sued each other in patent infringements cases over the past couple of years.
