Baker wants to redevelop underused state properties

Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday morning outlined plans to use underutilized state properties for open space, economic development and housing purposes, touting his plans as a way to generate new tax revenues.

The administration says it already identified 40 parcels ready for solicitations for proposals, including "high value properties" in Boston ready for retail and housing, parcels in Northampton ready for redevelopment, and parcels near highways in Plymouth, Carver and Taunton.

The announcement comes after the MBTA on Friday said it would be looking to convert surface parking lots into a mix of transit-oriented development with new garages built to replace the lost spots. The T is hoping to maximize its own revenue generation to help close a projected deficit at the transit agency in fiscal 2017.
