Baker urged to more sharply reduce carbon emissions across region
Gov. Charlie Baker is being urged to work with other northeast and mid-Atlantic states to double the annual rate of reduction in carbon emissions across the region.
A coalition of lawmakers, academics and energy companies will deliver a letter to Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday urging the governor to work with other northeast and mid-Atlantic states to double the annual rate of reduction in carbon emissions across the region.
The regional cap-and-trade program known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative calls for carbon-dioxide emissions to be reduced 2.5 percent a year between 2015 and 2020. After a 4.8 percent decline in 2016, Environment Massacchusetts's Meghan Hassett said the group is working to double that cap reduction rate to 5 percent.
More than 130 people from Massachusetts have reportedly signed the letter, including the mayors of Worcester and Holyoke, Sens. Jamie Eldridge, Harriette Chandler and Jason Lewis and Reps. Mike Connolly and Frank Smizik. ADI Energy, Acela Energy, Brightstar Solar and Barrett Energy Resources Group have also joined the effort.
The group plans to rally outside the State House on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. before entering the building to bring the letter to Baker's office. Speakers at the event on Beacon Street will include Hassett, Connolly, Cape and Vineyard Electric Cooperative Executive Director Elizabeth Argo, Broad Institute biomedical researcher Andres Colubri and Boston University computational biologist Stefano Monti.
