Baker: 'Too soon' to know if fed funds will dry up under Trump

SHNS Gov. Charlie Baker said Donald Trump will hopefully make good staff picks for his administration.

Gov. Charlie Baker has had little good to say about President-elect Donald Trump over the past few months, but just hours after Trump claimed victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton Wednesday morning the governor said he trusts that Trump's business background has instilled at least one principle in Trump that he shares.

"I think he said all the right things last night, and as I said, people are policy. And I know that as a guy who's had a lot of success in business he knows that, too. And I'm looking forward to seeing who ends up taking some key positions in that administration," Baker said.

Baker renounced Trump during the primary, and then said he would not vote for anyone for president. The two U.S. senators and nine U.S. representatives from Massachusetts are all Democrats, creating a potential partisan stumbling block in dealing with the incoming Republican administration. Asked about the potential that Massachusetts would be hurt financially by a Trump presidency, Baker said, "I think it's way too soon to draw conclusions about any of that."

Baker also said Wednesday he does not know who within Donald Trump's inner-circle or his administration he will communicate with on the important matters involving the state and federal government, but he did call to congratulate New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

"I have no idea at this point who a go-to person would be. I did reach out to Governor Christie, who I've obviously known for a long time. I just called him to congratulate him, and I would expect at some point I'll probably hear back from him," Baker told reporters on Wednesday.

Before the New Hampshire primary, Baker endorsed Christie, the gruff New Jersey governor who has seen his political prospects darken and brighten this year. After losing the New Hampshire primary, Christie endorsed Trump and endured the humiliation of his former top aides receiving guilty verdicts related to the traffic problems they caused in Fort Lee. Reportedly passed over in the selection of a running mate, Christie is now set to lead Trump's transition team.
