Pleased with his new close-cropped charity haircut, Gov. Charlie Baker said he hasn't sported a "whiffle" since he was a boy, but is so far enjoying how his new look has allowed him to go incognito.
"People have not recognized me. I walked in to get a cup of coffee at a deli earlier and nobody had a clue who I was, and it was actually kind of fun," Baker told reporters Tuesday afternoon.
On Tuesday morning, Baker joined Quincy Mayor Tom Koch and more than 500 employees of Granite Telecommunications receiving buzz cuts for charity. Baker said more than $3 million had been raised for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund.
Calling his haircut a "whiffle," Baker told reporters he hadn't worn that look since the age of 12.
"I'm hoping to be mistaken for my own police detail at some point," the governor quipped.
Baker had a mixed reaction to renderings of what the buzz cut might look like, and said his children were split on the hairdo.
"I was a little nervous about what it was going to look like, since I've seen all the Photoshopped versions and some of them are pretty cool and some of them are not so cool," Baker said. He said, "My boys think it's awesome. My daughter, not so much. I got the OMG text from her when she saw the picture."
Baker, who generally wears his hair parted across his brow, said he would only ever get a buzz cut again if it was for charity, and said he was relieved his wife Lauren did not groan or grimace during the shearing.
"I was really worried about how my wife would feel," he said.
