Baker names WPI, Montachusett heads to STEM board

The heads of two Central Massachusetts schools, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical District have been named to the state’s board overseeing STEM education.

Laurie Leshin, the WPI president, and Sheila Harrity, the superintendent of the Fitchburg-based regional school district, are among 29 members recently appointed by the Baker Administration, his office announced Wednesday.

The STEM Advisory Council works to expand access to science, technology, engineering and math across the state. The new council met for the first time March 24.

The council is co-chaired by Congressman Joseph Kennedy III (D-MA) and Jeff Leiden, the chairman, president and CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston.
