Gov. Charlie Baker on Friday said the Massachusetts state government would provide any needed help in Worcester's attempt to lure the Triple A minor league Red Sox from Pawtucket, R.I. to the city.
Baker said at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting the state would support the city's effort any time it undertook a major economic development project, including with the PawSox.
Worcester city and chamber officials have met repeatedly with PawSox executives -- including owner Larry Lucchino -- about moving the team to Central Massachusetts, since talks with Rhode Island over building a new stadium in Pawtucket have stalled. The PawSox officials have toured the Wyman Gordon site in Worcester's Canal District as a possible location for a new stadium.
Jay Ash, the Massachusetts secretary of the Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development, has been an active participant in those talks with the Red Sox. Although no terms have been publicly disclosed, the PawSox were looking for roughly $40 million in state and local incentives for its Rhode Island stadium.
Baker said the state could provide help with either infrastructure or public investment, although he did not offer any details.
