If Simon Properties Group has its way, the Auburn Mall could soon be home to a new 62,940-square-foot medical facility, replacing previous plans for a movie theater.
The information came to light in documents submitted to the planning board for review ahead of a meeting on Nov. 15 to review the change, said Auburn Town Planner Matthew Benoit. The site would be two stories and replace the Macy’s Home Store, although the exact nature of the facilities is not yet known. Benoit said this new plan could be a good move for the mall.
“They are adding more tenants to a space that only houses one right now. They are getting four extra tenants so that is certainly better for the business,” he said.
Those other tenants would take up the remaining Macy’s space and would be a mix of retail and restaurant.
The previous plans that were approved last March had called for a 51,439-square-foot, 1,270-seat theater with 10 to 12 screens. The approval also encompassed a new restaurant.
A representative for Simon declined to comment on the plans, saying that it is the company’s policy not to comment on ongoing lease negotiations.
Any new development at the mall would be hugely important not only to the shopping center but to the town itself, said Benoit.
“It’s one of the more well-known businesses when you think of the town of Auburn,” he said. “It’s economic welfare is very important to us just as it is to (Simon Properties).”
Benoit declined to comment on the impact a possible medical center would have at that location in Auburn, saying that he expected more information to come out at the planning board meeting.
