Atlantic Union Wins Approval Of 2 Programs

Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, which closed in 2011 after losing its accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, took a step Tuesday toward winning accreditation from another group when the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education voted to approve two bachelor's degree programs, which will help it pursue accreditation.

Katy Abel, associate commissioner for external affairs for the board, confirmed the vote this morning. The approved degrees are a bachelor of arts in health science and a bachelor of arts in theology and religion, she said.

Atlantic Union, which is affiliated with The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, had been in talks with a Maryland college to merge and re-open, but talks fell apart in late 2011.

The college hired a new president, Dr. Duane Cady, in November.

Atlantic Union has said it plans to pursue accreditation through the Transnational Association of Christian College and Schools. The state's education department doesn't accredit schools, but requires accreditation to permit schools to grant degrees.
