A hydroelectric power project at the L.P. Athol Corp. of Athol is one of nine clean energy projects awarded a total of $3 million in grants from the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust.
The Athol project was awarded a $250,000 grant to increase the efficiency of its hydroelectric power system by installing new polyethylene trash racks, new trash raking machines and new automated electrical controls.
The improvements will result in 107 kilowatts of hydroelectric power generation at the facility. L.P. Athol provides warehousing and facility rentals to nonprofit organizations, light manufacturers and other industry service providers.
The trust, which is overseen by the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, also awarded grants of as much as $400,000 to projects and facilities in Charlemont, Kingston, Pittsfield, Chestnut Hill, Turner Falls, Dedham and Cape Cod.
