Athol Hospital executives will break ground on a new emergency room and medical office building project with a ceremony on the hospital’s front lawn on April 26, according to a statement from its parent, Heywood Healthcare, on Tuesday.
The project will accommodate Athol’s growing patient populations and add state-of-the-art facilities to the campus, Heywood said. The new emergency department will double the capacity of the current space, including eight acute care rooms, and six private, behavioral health rooms.
The upper floors of the medical office building will house new medical office space for an array of services, including specialty care, primary care and behavioral health care.
Heywood said the project will be complemented by a new family medicine practice and walk-in care center located in the Market Basket plaza in town, which is slated to open this summer.
Heywood this week announced it plans to raise $10 million in a capital campaign to fund the Athol Hospital project, as well as the expansion and modernization of the Heywood Hospital Surgical Pavilion, and the development of the Quabbin Retreat, a new substance abuse and mental health treatment facility.
