Assumption gets $1M for rehab counselor training

Assumption University in Worcester has received a $1-million federal grant to help address a shortage of rehabilitation counselors.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which was announced Wednesday, will better help Assumption prepare students for careers helping those with disabilities live a more independent lifestyle. Nicholas Cioe, the school’s director for the rehabilitation counseling program, said in a statement an acute shortage exists in having enough counselors to meet demand from those experiencing disabilities.

The school’s rehabilitation counseling program works with students looking to work with those with physical, mental, developmental or emotional disabilities. Assumption says it uses a multi-disciplinary approach to the program, drawing from rehabilitation, sociology, psychology, natural sciences, economics, education and the humanities.

The federal grant will help Assumption provide tuition assistance to students enrolled in the program or interested in doing so, with priority given to those working or completing their internships in vocational rehabilitation agencies assisting those with disabilities. It will also help the university’s faculty attend academic conferences and enhance the program.
