Assumption College in Worcester said Tuesday it has received pre-requisite approval from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for a bachelor's degree in nursing program.
The program still requires approval from the New England Commission of Higher Education, which the Worcester college said is expected by the end of the year.
Assumption is looking to add a nursing program at a time when the nursing industry is expected to grow significantly. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 15-percent rise in registered nursing employment from 2016 to 2026, for 438,100 new jobs. Median pay is $70,000, according to the bureau.
Assumption said it is planning a new facility for the nursing program to include a laboratory to complement students' acute care and community-based clinical experiences. Students in the nursing program will receive a liberal arts education to help with well-reasoned decision-making, critical thinking and effective communication, the school said.
