Westborough-based Ascend Elements, a lithium ion battery recycling and manufacturing company, is partnering with a Mexican firm on a proprietary technology that yields battery-grade graphite material from spent lithium-ion batteries.

The development agreement announced Tuesday is with Koura, whose parent company Orbia is one of the world's largest producers of fluoroproducts and technologies.

Ascend’s hydro-to-anode process technology uses recycled batteries to produce over 99.9% pure graphite, energy capacity, and cycle life that is on par with virgin battery-grade graphite anode material, according to the announcement.

This technology will especially benefit the plug-in electric car industry, which is projected to grow at a 30% compound annual rate through 2030. Recycling batteries also reduces North America’s reliance on foreign entities for high-purity graphite, according to Ascend.

"The ability to recover graphite for use in batteries helps solve another critical material challenge in the battery supply chain and minimizes the need for mining new materials,” said Michael O'Kronley, CEO of Ascend Elements, in a written press release.
