As U.S. death toll surpasses 100K, Worcester County reached 716 on Wednesday

Worcester County recorded 90 new coronavirus cases and 16 new fatalities on Wednesday, as the U.S. passed the grim milestone of 100,000 coronavirus-related deaths.

The new cases Wednesday bring to 10,647 the total for Worcester County, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Statewide, there were 527 new reported cases bringing the total to 94,220.

Reported fatalities in Worcester County increased to 716 due to the new deaths on Wednesday, and throughout Massachusetts there were 74 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 6,547.

DPH on Wednesday reported 6,663 new coronavirus tests administered, with a total of 552,144 overall.

The City of Worcester reported 37 new cases, bringing its total to 4,037.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported 206 total inpatient cases as of Wednesday, with 79 in intensive care. There have been 10 new coronavirus-related deaths at the hospitals bringing the overall to 266, and 319 employees have tested positive.

Saint Vincent said Wednesday it celebrated discharging its 200th coronavirus patient.

MetroWest Medical Center in Natick and Framingham reported 55 confirmed and suspected cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reported 19, according to DPH. In total, the hospitals had 19 cases in the ICU. Harrington Hospital, Heywood Hospital, and HealthAlliance in Leominster reported 33 total confirmed and suspected cases, and nine in intensive care.

Nationally, coronavirus deaths have surpassed 100,000, and there are almost 1.7 million confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there are close to 5.7 million cases and 353,414 fatalities.
