Popular downtown Worcester restaurant Armsby Abbey will not reopen on Tuesday, as its owners Alec Lopez and Sherri Sadowski had previously hoped when they announced a summer shutdown in June, according to a Facebook post from the company.
“Armsby Abbey will ride out this storm and re-open when the time is right,” the owners wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday. “Unfortunately, September 1st, is not the right time. Thank you for all your love, support, patience, & understanding.”
Citing significant financial losses brought on from the coronavirus pandemic, Lopez and Sadowski said at the time they had lost 90% of their sales when the establishment shifted to a take-out model in compliance with state regulations meant to curb the spread of the virus. Unlike many other restaurants, Armsby did not offer outdoor dining when it was once again allowed because they did not have the space. The restaurant has remained shuttered as restrictions on indoor dining were lifted over the summer.
The restaurant reported laying off 30 staff members on March 13.
“We believe Armsby Abbey is part of the heart & soul that makes up the Worcester community; one of the places so many of you have chosen to celebrate life’s moments… first dates, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and even the passing of those closest to you,” the owners said in their Sunday statement. “It’s these shared experiences over amazing beer, handcrafted cocktails, and seasonal fare that help create cherished memories. Providing you with these experiences is what our team misses most and looks forward to offering you once again soon.”
They did not provide an updated reopening date.
