Area Unemployment Down Sharply in November

Unemployment in Central Massachusetts fell significantly over the past month but is still higher than at this point last year.

Greater Worcester’s seasonally unadjusted jobless rate fell from 7.5 to 7.1 percent over the month, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.  But Worcester’s unemployment was just 6.8 percent a year ago.

Unemployment in the Framingham area fell from 5.5 to 5.1 percent over the past month, but is up from 4.7 percent in 2012.

North Central Massachusetts saw its jobless rate fall from 9.1 to 8.7 percent over the past month. The Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area had an unemployment rate of just 8.4 percent a year ago.

Statewide, unemployment fell from 6.8 to 6.6 percent over the past month, but has risen from 6.2 percent a year ago.

The number of people employed over the past month rose by 2,020 in Worcester, 1,300 in Framingham and 819 in North Central Massachusetts. The number of people unemployed over the past month fell by 928 in Worcester, 614 in Framingham and 232 in Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner.
