A recent survey by Framingham-based office retail giant Staples found that 60 percent of small business owners say they spend more time holding their mobile devices than their spouse's hand.
According to the survey, however, the advent of the virtual office has actually made for a better work-life balance, respondents also said.
Technology is allowing business owners and managers to spend less time working at their desk, according to 56 percent of respondents. And another 52 percent said they feel more comfortable taking a vacation now because they can remain "plugged-in." Only 35 percent of respondents said that last year.
Hopeless romantics need not fret though. When asked if they would feel greater withdrawal after a week without their phone or their spouse, 63 percent of respondents said they would miss their husband or wife more.
The survey interviewed 300 small business owners and managers around the country.
