A 15,000-square-foot shared work space at Marlborough's Apex Center of New England is half full less than six months after opening.
The space is one of three in operation by the firm Venture X, along with one in Richmond, Va., and a third just outside Toronto. A fourth is in the works in Rochester, N.Y. The Marlborough location is part of the Florida company United Franchise Group and owned by a franchisee, Ryan Gagne, who said this week the space has reached 50% occupancy of its private offices.
The space caters to both short- and long-term members, with more than 70 members making use of the space, Gagne said. They include workers from marketing, information technology, executive search firms, legal and financial services and other areas.
Marlborough is already awash in large offices — from Boston Scientific and Sunovion Pharmaceuticals to Hologic and Quest Diagnostics — but Venture X's shared work space is unusual for the city.
Venture X, like the industry giant WeWork and others, offers monthly rates on desks or private offices, as well as conference rooms rented by the hour. Venture X provides 24-hour access and takes care of cleaning services, printing and copying services, Internet access and other services.
The Marlborough space part of an office component of the Apex Center development opened in late 2017 bringing a mix of uses to a stretch of Route 20 just west of I-495. The development includes Apex Entertainment, a facility with an arcade, bowling and other activities, as well as a Hyatt Place and Fairfield Inn & Suites, and other restaurants and retailers.
