Apex Center to create 1,600 jobs

PHOTOS/EDD Cote The Hyatt Place hotel, under construction at the Apex Center of New England, is among the leading projects looking to diversify Marlborough's developments and provide new taxes for further economic revitalization. It, along with a Fairfield Inn & Suites at the Apex Center, will be the city's 10th and 11th hotels.

A major commercial mixed-use development coming to Marlborough this fall will create 1,600 jobs when it’s fully operational.

Employment numbers for the Apex Center of New England were announced Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito during a tour of the project site, according to the Marlborough Economic Development Corp. Half of those jobs will be full-time, and half will be part-time.

The 475,000-square-foot Apex Center, scheduled to open in October, will eventually contain 11 buildings, including a 150,000-square-foot entertainment complex, two hotels, six restaurants, retail stores and office buildings. According to MEDC, 96 percent of the space is currently leased; tenants include restaurants such as Friendly’s, Qdoba, Starbucks, Evviva Cucina and 110 Grill. The project has also created 400 temporary construction jobs.

Polito asked to tour the site after the state granted $3 million to Marlborough in November for roadway improvements to support the Apex Center, including new turn lanes and updated signals along Route 20 West.

“When you have a private business owner, who wants to come forward to do something in a community like this, when he comes to city hall and you have a full team ready and open for business, it makes his decision that much easier as to whether to invest here or somewhere else,” said Polito. “So, it’s a real credit to Marlborough for really signaling to the business community that it wants to see this kind of activity and that it’s ready to take it on as a community.”
