The American Antiquarian Society's regularly scheduled Wednesday tours will be suspended after June 14 as construction on an $18-million expansion begins.

The antiquarian society is reconfiguring its main building at 185 Salisbury St., moving the main building’s conservation laboratory and mechanical equipment. It is creating new space for seminars, meetings and exhibitions, and adding a 7,000-square-foot multi-story addition that adds a copper exterior to its brick facade.

Earlier this year, the society bought a 5,400-square-foot home at 4 Regent St. for $400,000 and plans to renovate it for offices, meetings and storage space. It also plans to demolish the building at 90 Park Ave. for additional parking.

The society received an $18-million tax-exempt bond from MassDevelopment to finance the renovations.
