Hologic, a Marlborough-based medical technology company, announced Monday that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will cover the company’s Acessa procedure, which treats uterine fibroids, according to a press release from Hologic.

Indiana-based Anthem BCBS is the nation’s second largest health plan with 40 million members, and changed its medical policy to cover radiofrequency ablation, which includes the Acessa procedure, the press release said.

An estimated 11 million people in the United States are diagnosed with uterine fibroids, which causes excessive uterine bleeding and pelvic discomfort, according to the release.

“Anthem’s decision will create significantly greater access to options that align with the strong preferences many women and their physicians have for safe and effective treatment that enables both symptom relief and uterine preservation,” said Essex Mitchell, division president at Hologic, in a statement.
