Anna Maria College in Paxton announced on Tuesday it has named Sherman Cowan as the new director of its diversity and inclusion department.
Cowan comes to Anna Maria from a position as community director and conflict resolution/mediation specialist at Wellesley College, where he worked with students, campus counseling, and campus police to facilitate dialogue about complex community issues, according to a press release from Anna Maria.
He has also spent 31 years in military service, during which he held leadership roles addressing discrimination and sexual harassment complaints from Air National Guard members.
Cowan is a member of the International Ombudsman Association, the American College Personnel Association, and the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators.
He holds a master’s degree in counseling from State University of New York at Oswego.
Cowan is taking the place of Briana-Allyn Amissah, who held the position for more than two years before relocating out of the area, said Anna Maria’s chief communications officer, Hugh Drummond.
